IP Video Keeps Watch on St Lawrence Seaway

IndigoVision’s technology is providing remote surveillance for the Welland Canal section of the St. Lawrence Seaway – Canada’s Highway H2O

A major CCTV upgrade to the Welland Canal section of the St. Lawrence Seaway has been successfully completed using IndigoVision’s IP Video technology. Dubbed Highway H2O, the Seaway is the safe, reliable and environmentally friendly transportation route of choice to the heart of North America. The all-Canadian Welland Canal is 27 miles long and connects Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Eight giant locks along its route lift ships 326 feet between the two lakes. Remote surveillance of the vertical lifts is fundamental for traffic management and the safe operation of the locks for shipping and the public. The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation monitors the entire canal system from a state-of-the-art traffic control center

When additional remote surveillance at Bridge No.11 was required, a new approach was needed, as the analog fiber network used for the existing video had no spare capacity. Following a review of available technologies and suppliers, IndigoVision’s technology was chosen for its high quality video and excellent transmission power. IndigoVision’s local distributor, Northern Video Systems, supplied 16 8000 MPEG-4 quality video transceivers, which were installed by The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation’s own specialist team.

The 8000’s digitally compress and transmit the camera video and control data over a newly installed IP-Network, back to the central control room – a distance of over 6 miles. The video is then converted back to analog and fed to the existing monitors. Apart from very high quality video, IndigoVision transmission technology ensures minimum impact on network bandwidth providing ample spare capacity for the future. The cost benefits of the adopted technology compared to traditional analog solutions for the existing project and future expansion, are significant.

“Any new system had to be transparent to the traffic control center users, they should not be able to distinguish between the quality of existing analog video and the new digital feeds. IndigoVision’s video quality was excellent, easily meeting this criterion. The initial phase of the project has been so successful that it is our long-term goal to move all of the CCTV and security systems across to the IP network,” said Andrew Nolan, Electrical Engineer at The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation.

An IndigoVision solution was used as the IP Video backbone for the entire security system for the Athens 2004 Olympics

IndigoVision technology was used to provide an IP Video backbone for the entire security system at the Athens Olympics. The IP-network covered over 30 sites including the Olympic village and stadia, Athens city, 9 ports and hotels. The backbone provided a reliable foundation for all the security facilities and helped contribute to the overall success of the Games.

Over 700 IndigoVision 8000 transmitter/receiver modules were used to transmit MPEG-4 quality digital video, audio and alarm data over the IP-Network. The completed system is one of the largest IP Video infrastructure projects implemented anywhere in the world. The IndigoVision 8000 units were interfaced to many thousands of analog cameras via matrices, allowing control and viewing of any camera from any point on the network. Video recording was handled by a combination of IndigoVision’s Network Video Recorder (NVR) Software running on 40 different servers and locally installed hardware digital video recorders (DVRs) that were interfaced to the IndigoVision IP-Network to enable remote playback.

A command and control system integrated together all aspects of the security and surveillance. IndigoVision’s SDK 8000 development software tools were used to integrate the IP Video network into the command and control system. SDK 8000 allows System Integrators to easily implement IndigoVision solutions and to access the many benefits of the IP Video technology. The command and control system integrated CCTV surveillance, video motion detection, access control, traffic management, automatic number plate recognition, perimeter security and provided management control and data.

IndigoVision’s technology provides a cost effective and more flexible solution for video surveillance than traditional analog CCTV installations. The system is easily scaleable allowing additional cameras to be added anywhere on the network without additional cabling. The IndigoVision family includes a range of hardware and software products including IP cameras, transmitters and receivers, recorders and ‘Control Center’ software applications.
